ORTHO-K

WHAT IS ORTHO-K?
Orthokeratology, also known as Ortho-K, is the process of correcting your vision with special retainer lenses worn while you sleep. You wake up with clear vision all day without the need for glasses or contacts.
Millions of people prefer ortho-k over other vision correction methods such as Lasik, eyeglasses and contacts. The benefits of Ortho-k allows the wearer to live free from any vision correction during the daytime.
Ortho-k is great for active people, those who work in dusty environments, swimmers, dry or sensitive eyes, and anyone who may not want to -- or be able to -- undergo laser surgery.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Ortho-k lenses work by correcting the shape and therefore the focal points of your eyes, giving you clear vision.
A gentle hydraulic force is created by a groove in the retainer that is filled with liquid. The lens gently molds and reshapes the corneal surface with a redistribution of fluid across the epithelial layer of the eyes.
Unlike with Lasik surgery, no cells are damaged or removed during the Ortho-k process. So, it's non-invasive, painless and great for sensitive eyes.

DID YOU KNOW?
Wearing glasses can actually make your eyes worse! While vision is clear, the peripheral light rays stimulate the eye to grow longer (axial elongation) which increases myopia.
MYOPIA CONTROL FOR KIDS
Ortho-k has special, important benefits for children between the ages of 4 and 16. While they are still growing, a child's eyes also elongate, which causes myopia to worsten.
Ortho-k can stop their eyes from elongating and prevent their vision from deteriorating to the highest levels of myopia where blurrier vision, thicker eyeglasses and serious eye disease is more likely.
Starting Ortho-k at the first sign of myopia is now considered the standard of care. Cosmetically, socially, academically, functionally and health-wise, the benefits are huge.
At Orbit, we treat a lot of children with Ortho-k and the results are impressive. Extremely near-sighted patients can see clearly after wearing Ortho-k for just a few days. Our practitioners use only Ortho-k lenses approved by the FDA and Health Canada for the overnight correction of myopia.
Myopia is more than just needing glasses. Myopia is a global epidemic.
Increased myopia is accompanied by a dramatic rise in the incidence of eye disease and vision loss because of the effects of axial eye elongation. A myopic eye stretches and weakens, increasing the risks of eye disease.
Myopia is rising rapidly in part because of the dramatic increase in viewing time of digital devices by children and young people today. Myopia is expected to reach 52% of the global population by 2050.
If your child wears glasses, please book a consultation with us to determine if he or she is a good candidate for myopia control using Ortho-k.
